Minnesota Shooting Suspect: Democrat Targeted, Faced Past Threats
Minnesota shooting Prompts Security Concerns for Politicians
The recent Minnesota shooting, in which Vance Boelter allegedly killed state rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, has reignited concerns about the safety and security of elected officials.Former U.S. Rep. Dean Phillips, a Democrat, said such threats are, sadly, not new.
Boelter was apprehended Sunday, nearly two days after the alleged attack. Phillips, who was himself reportedly on Boelter’s “hit list,” acknowledged the constant threat of harm he faced while in office. He noted that security was the most expensive item in his presidential campaign budget.
Phillips emphasized that his personal experience is secondary to the broader implications for those considering public service. He expressed concern that political violence and extremism might deter individuals from aspiring to serve their country.
“This isn’t about me,” Phillips said. “I’m used to it, but I’m thinking about my kids right now, and I’m thinking about all the people in our country, Chris, who aspire to help this country, to aspire to serve, who are now thinking twice about it as of creeps like the one that perpetuated thes terrible crimes.”
Despite this instance of political violence, phillips remains optimistic. He urged leaders to unite against extremism.
“I think it’s time that people like (rep.) Mike Lawler and I, and others who know better, start rising, and I just hope people start paying attention,” he said.
