On January 8, 2026, teh Border Management Authority (BMA),in collaboration with the South African National Defense Force, intercepted a group of 20 minors and 10 adults near the Limpopo River, close to the Beitbridge border fence. The group was suspected of attempting to cross into Zimbabwe.

Age and Parental Supervision

The intercepted minors ranged in age from five to 17 years old. According to BMA Commissioner Dr. Michael Masiapato, preliminary investigations revealed that only one of the ten adults present was the parent of one of the children.the remaining minors were traveling without parental supervision or legal guardianship. South African child protection laws require lawful guardianship for minors.

Concerns and response

The BMA has expressed serious concerns regarding potential child exploitation and violations of both immigration and child welfare legislation. All individuals involved have been placed in the care of relevant authorities. Processes are underway to verify the identities of the minors and determine the circumstances surrounding their travel, adhering to South African laws and international child protection protocols. UNICEF’s resources on child trafficking highlight the risks faced by unaccompanied minors.

Ongoing Investigations and Collaboration

The BMA is working with the South african Police Service, the Department of Social Development, and other stakeholders to investigate the incident. The focus is on establishing the minors’ identities, understanding the reasons for their movement, and implementing appropriate interventions. Dr. Masiapato affirmed the BMA’s zero-tolerance policy towards the unlawful movement of children across South African borders. The South African Police Service is a key partner in these investigations.

BMA’s Commitment to Border Security

The BMA reiterated its commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals, notably children, and to intensifying joint operations with security partners to prevent exploitation and maintain border integrity. The authority prioritizes safeguarding the nation’s borders while upholding human rights standards. The Immigration Act of South Africa governs border control and immigration procedures.
