The second round of the women’s singles at the Guadalajara Open Akron (Mexico/Guadalajara, hard, WTA500) took place on the 11th, with world No. 80 Camila Osorio (Colombia) defeating seventh seed Vicente Kudermetova in a thrilling match that lasted over three hours, winning in a full set of 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (2-7), 7-5 to advance to the quarterfinals.
The 22-year-old Osorio participated in the U.S. Open (USA/New York, hard, Grand Slam) last week but lost in the first round for the second year in a row. However, she bounced back at the Guadalajara Open in Akron, defeating world No. 101 H. Baptista (USA) in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the second round.
In the first set of the second round, both players broke each other twice, forcing the match into a tiebreaker. Osorio led 5-1 and held off a comeback from Kudermetova, taking the second set point to take the lead.
In the second set, Osorio took a break, just like in the first set, forcing the match into a tiebreak. She got a mini-break first but then lost six points in a row, and the match was tied at one set.
In the final set, Osorio’s service games were unstable, and she lost five straight games from the start, putting her on the brink of defeat. However, she fought back from the sixth game and won seven straight games to win the match after three hours and 21 minutes.
Osorio will now face world No. 86 K. Rakhimova in the quarterfinals, who advanced after third-seeded Viktor Azarenka withdrew from the second round at 6-2, 3-0.
