Miracle in Milan: Liverpool Stun with Epic Comeback in UCL Thriller
Liverpool Showcases Power in Champions League Opener
England’s powerhouse Liverpool have demonstrated their ability since the first match of the Champions League.
Liverpool secured a 3-1 victory in the away game against AC Milan (Italy) in the first leg of the 2024-2025 UEFA Champions League stage held at the San Siro in Milan, Italy.
The three competitions organized by UEFA (Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League) have undergone a major restructuring starting from the 2024–2025 season. Previously, 32 teams competed in the finals, but this season 36 teams will participate, with 4 teams added.
As the number of participating teams increased, a single league stage was introduced in the existing group stage format. Instead of six home-away games against three opposing teams, the team plays one game each against eight other teams, each of which is assigned two teams from Pots 1 through 4. Half the games are played at home and half away.
In the league phase, like the existing league, 3 points are applied for a win and 1 point for a draw. After the end of the league phase, the top 8 teams automatically advance to the round of 16. Teams ranked 9–16 will be seeded in a home-away knockout playoff draw and will then compete with teams ranked 17–24 for the remaining eight spots.
Milan were in the mood early in the game. Three minutes into the first half, Christian Pulisic ran down the right on a counterattack and finished with his left foot, giving Milan a 1-0 lead.
However, Liverpool managed to hit back with two first-half headers from Ibrahima Kona in the 23rd minute and Virgil van Dijk in the 41st minute, before Dominik Soboslawi’s right-footed direct shot inside the box put a wedge in the game. Counter-attack in the 22nd minute of the second half. It was particularly surprising that two central defenders scored.
The 2005 Champions League final match was also a battle between the two teams. Meanwhile, Milan scored three goals in the first half to go into halftime with a 3-0 lead. However, Liverpool scored three goals in the second half to level the score and then won the penalty shootout to lift the trophy. The event was called the “Miracle of Istanbul” where the final was held.

Liverpool overturned the attacking might of a mighty Milan on this day and won. It was Liverpool who struck their long-time rivals again.
