Channing Godfrey Peoples highlights Black Stories in ‘Miss Juneteenth’
Channing godfrey Peoples’s debut feature film, Miss Juneteenth, is now available on streaming platforms after premiering at the Sundance Film Festival. The film explores themes of community, beauty, and the complexities surrounding Juneteenth, a holiday commemorating the emancipation of slaves in Texas.
Peoples says the June 19 holiday, celebrated in her hometown of Fort Worth, holds deep personal significance. Juneteenth celebrations frequently enough include barbecues, parades, and scholarship pageants for young black women.
“I feel like I’ve been living Miss Juneteenth my whole life,” Peoples saeid.
The director recalls being impressed by the pageants she saw as a child. “I saw these beautiful young African American women on stage that looked like me,” she said. “I saw them in their beauty, in their intelligence, in their talent - and what struck me the most was that they were hopeful.… I always wondered what happened to those women.”
Miss Juneteenth tells the story of Turquoise, played by Nicole Beharie, a former pageant queen and single mother. Turquoise hopes her daughter, Kai, will win the Miss Juneteenth pageant, while also working toward a better life for herself.
Peoples discussed the mother-daughter relationship at the film’s center. Initially written from a daughter’s outlook, her perspective shifted after becoming a mother herself. “After having my daughter, it changed my perspective a bit about having hopes and dreams for another human being and wanting to protect them no matter what,” she said. “I was now looking for the joy as well.”
Peoples also drew parallels between the holiday’s history and Turquoise’s journey. “Commemorating Juneteenth is about our ancestors who were slaves in texas finally getting their freedom… and I wanted to portray that in Turquoise’s journey in finding her own sense of freedom,” she said. Turquoise’s dreams are rerouted but reshaped into something new.
Peoples emphasizes the importance of portraying ordinary Black lives. “I see the beauty in these stories of ordinary folks,” she said. “They’re unusual to me as they’re the people that I grew up with… I want to tell [these] stories… that haven’t been seen very much.”
She cites Charles Burnett’s Killer of Sheep as a key inspiration, highlighting its nuanced portrayal of Black life. othre inspirations include Julie Dash’s Daughters of the Dust, Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, and Gordon Parks’s Segregation series.
reflecting on her first feature film, Peoples stressed the importance of staying true to the core reason for telling the story. Support from organizations like the sundance Institute helped protect the film’s nuanced and sensitive narrative.
Peoples hopes audiences will recognize the humanity of Black people. “Black people are still navigating whether we have the right to exist,” she said. “It’s crucial right now that we amplify Black stories.”
As for celebrating Juneteenth, Peoples noted the holiday is about community. While unable to gather in person this year, she plans to commemorate the day with her family, honoring their ancestors’ journey to freedom.
