A video circulating online Thursday appeared to show a Syrian citizen discovering an american man in the al-Dhiabiyyeh neighborhood, a Damascus suburb. The man’s identity remained unclear, but speculation immediately swirled that it might very well be Tice, who vanished in Syria over a decade ago.

However,Syrian sources swiftly denied the claim,stating that the man found was an American citizen named Travis from Missouri,who had been detained in a prison under the regime of bashar al-Assad. syria TV, a news outlet linked to the Syrian government, reported that CBS News confirmed the identity of the man as Travis Timmerman.
Tice, a freelance journalist, disappeared in August 2012 while reporting near Damascus. A video released weeks later showed him blindfolded and held captive by gunmen.His whereabouts have remained a mystery ever since.
The U.S. government has long accused the Assad regime of being responsible for Tice’s disappearance,a claim Damascus has consistently denied. In August 2022, President Joe Biden publicly stated that the U.S.believed Tice was being held by the syrian government and called for his immediate release.
“On the tenth anniversary of his kidnapping, I call on Syria to help us end this and bring him home,” Biden said. “My administration has no higher priority than the recovery and return of Americans held hostage or wrongfully detained.”
The State Department has also confirmed “direct discussions” with the Syrian government in an effort to secure Tice’s release.
