Damascus, Syria – Hope flickered briefly for teh ‍family ⁢of missing American journalist⁤ Austin Tice, only to be dashed by conflicting reports emerging⁤ from ⁣Syria.

A video circulating online Thursday appeared to show a Syrian citizen discovering an american man in the al-Dhiabiyyeh neighborhood, a Damascus suburb. The man’s identity‍ remained unclear, but speculation immediately‍ swirled⁢ that ⁣it might very well be‍ Tice, who vanished in Syria ‍over a decade ago.

Tice, a freelance journalist, disappeared in August 2012 while⁤ reporting near⁣ Damascus. A video‍ released weeks later showed him blindfolded and held captive by gunmen.His whereabouts have remained a mystery ⁣ever since.

The U.S. government has long ‍accused the Assad regime of being responsible⁤ for Tice’s disappearance,a claim Damascus has⁤ consistently denied. In August 2022, President Joe Biden⁢ publicly stated that the U.S.believed Tice was being‍ held by ‍the⁢ syrian ‍government and called ‍for his immediate release.

“On the tenth anniversary of his kidnapping, I‍ call on Syria‍ to help us end this and bring him home,” Biden said. “My administration has no higher ⁣priority than the ‍recovery and return of Americans held hostage ⁤or wrongfully detained.”

The State⁤ Department⁣ has also confirmed “direct discussions” with the Syrian government in an effort to secure Tice’s release.
