Search Intensifies on Lake Pontchartrain After Sailboat Collision
METAIRIE, La. - A multi-agency search is underway on Lake Pontchartrain after a sailboat collided with the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway early Sunday morning near mile marker 14. The incident has left one man missing and prompted a large-scale rescue and recovery operation.
According to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries,two people where aboard the sailboat when it struck the Causeway. following the collision, a man went overboard. A woman was rescued from the vessel by the U.S. Coast Guard.Her condition is currently unknown.
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the missing boater during this incredibly tough time,” said a spokesperson for the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, one of the agencies assisting in the search. “We are committed to working alongside our partners to exhaust every possible resource in the ongoing rescue and recovery efforts.”
The Louisiana department of Wildlife and Fisheries is leading the inquiry into the cause of the accident. Assisting agencies include the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office Marine Division, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the U.S. Coast Guard.
