Updated June 09, 2025
An Indian woman who disappeared after her husband was found murdered during their honeymoon is now in custody, police said Monday. The families of Sonam Raghuvanshi, 25, and Raja Raghuvanshi, 30, initially feared she had been abducted or killed.
Authorities now allege that Sonam Raghuvanshi orchestrated her husband’s murder during their honeymoon in Meghalaya, a state in northeastern india known for its “very stunning valleys.” Four men have also been arrested in connection with the honeymoon murder.
The couple, from Indore in Madhya Pradesh, married May 11. Raja’s brother, Vipin Raghuvanshi, said the arranged marriage occurred four months prior, and the couple seemed happy. Thay departed for Meghalaya on May 20, but went missing four days later.
A weeklong search involving police, disaster relief teams and local residents ended when Raja’s body was discovered in a gorge. His throat had been slit, and his wallet, gold ring and chain were missing. Sonam had vanished.
The families pressed authorities to transfer the case to federal police, even writing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for assistance. They accused Meghalaya police of mishandling the investigation, a claim the state’s chief minister denied.

On Monday,Meghalaya Director General of Police idashisha nongrang announced that Sonam Raghuvanshi had surrendered to police in Ghazipur district,Uttar Pradesh. Three additional suspects from Madhya Pradesh were also apprehended.
Police are continuing their investigation and questioning those arrested. The motive for the honeymoon murder remains unclear.
“She is innocent and she cannot do this,” Sonam’s father, Devi Singh, told reporters.
Devi Singh claimed his daughter had escaped her captors and maintained her innocence. He accused Meghalaya police of fabricating the story and appealed to home Minister Amit shah for a federal inquiry.
Initially, Vipin Raghuvanshi said he would not believe Sonam was involved “until she confessed.” However, he later acknowledged that one of the arrested men worked in Sonam’s office.
“Only Sonam can clarify,” he said. “If she’s guilty, she should be punished.”
Raghuvanshi also stated he now believes the Meghalaya goverment was truthful, reversing his earlier criticisms.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma praised his state’s police force for achieving a “major breakthrough” in the case.
