A Last-Minute Resolution
Superstar artist Missy Elliott has settled a copyright dispute with music producer Terry Williams just moments before jury selection was scheduled to begin in a Philadelphia federal courtroom on friday, August 22, 2025. The case, which has been winding through the legal system since 2018, centered on claims of unpaid songwriting credits adn royalties stemming from Elliott’s early work with the R&B group Sista.
The core of the Dispute
Williams, who operated a recording studio in Philadelphia, alleged he co-wrote four songs on Sista’s 1994 debut album, 4 All the Sistas Around da World: “Sweat You Down,” “Secret Admirer,” “I Wanna Know,” and “I Wanna Be with U.” He claimed Elliott improperly excluded him from songwriting credit and sought back royalties for his contributions. Elliott vehemently denied these claims, asserting that Williams did not contribute to the songs and that she hadn’t even met him until after the album was delivered to Elektra Records.
A Complex Legal Battle
The case presented conflicting narratives, leading Judge Nitza I.Quiñones Alejandro to rule last year that a jury would need to weigh the evidence to determine the truth. However, the judge previously dismissed a related claim by Williams alleging co-authorship of the 1996 Aaliyah hit “Heartbroken,” citing the statute of limitations. Billboard detailed the complexities of the case as it approached trial.
Beyond Elliott: Wider Implications
Williams’ lawsuit extended beyond Elliott, also targeting Timbaland, who produced 4 All the Sistas Around da World, as well as record labels Elektra, Atlantic Records, Warner Music Group, and Reservoir Media. These claims were put on hold pending the outcome of the trial between elliott and Williams, and their status remains unresolved as of this settlement.
