Mitchell Swimmer Emerson Smith Chooses University of South Dakota for College Career
Emerson Smith, a senior at Mitchell High School, has committed to continue her swimming career at the University of South Dakota (USD). She announced her decision on Instagram on August 1 and signed a national letter of intent on November 13 during National Signing Day events at her school. Smith plans to major in medical biology and minor in Spanish.
“I feel like it was always USD,” Smith said. She visited other colleges but felt nothing compared to USD’s team dynamic and facilities. She enjoyed her interactions with the coaches and appreciated the college’s size and proximity to home.
Smith specializes in backstroke and freestyle sprint distances. She joins a growing list of Mitchell High School swimmers who have chosen USD, including Lauren Anderson, a current sophomore on USD’s swim and dive roster.
“It’s funny that so many of us are going to USD, but I’ll know some of the other swimmers, which is nice,” Smith commented. She looks forward to the college team environment since South Dakota does not have high school swimming.

Q: Emerson,congratulations on your commitment to USD! What initially drew you to the University?
Emerson Smith: Thank you! I feel like it was always USD for me. I visited other colleges, but nothing compared to the team dynamic and the facilities at USD. I also had really great interactions with the coaches there. Plus, the size of the college and its proximity to home made it feel just right.
Q: You mentioned the team dynamic at USD. How do you feel that will impact your transition from high school to college swimming?
Emerson Smith: It’s really exciting because there aren’t high school swimming teams in South Dakota, so I’m looking forward to the college team environment. Knowing that I’ll join other swimmers from Mitchell High School, like Lauren Anderson, makes it even better. I already feel a sense of belonging.
Q: Specializing in backstroke and freestyle sprints, how have your skills developed throughout your swimming career?
Emerson Smith: Training with the Sioux Falls Swim Team has been instrumental. Last winter, I qualified for the USA swimming junior Futures, which was a big milestone for me. I’m constantly looking to improve, and I believe being part of a strong collegiate team will push me even further.
Q: Aside from swimming, you have a busy schedule with gymnastics and track. How do you balance these commitments?
Emerson Smith: It can get hectic, but I love being involved in multiple sports.Being a floor exercise specialist on the state champion gymnastics team has taught me discipline and teamwork, which I think will translate well into my swimming. Plus, being active in track keeps my conditioning up for swimming.
Q: you mentioned a change of pace with your college decision made. How does it feel now?
Emerson Smith: It’s such a relief! I can finally focus on enjoying my senior year and participating in various activities without the stress of the college selection process hanging over me. Now, I can relax and know I have it all figured out for the next step in my journey.
Q: With your plans to major in medical biology and minor in Spanish, what are your career aspirations?
Emerson Smith: I’m really interested in the medical field, and I think a background in biology will open many doors for me. Adding Spanish is something I’m passionate about because I believe it’s crucial to communicate with a diverse range of patients in healthcare. I’m excited to see where this path takes me.

Emerson Smith: I just want to thank everyone who has supported me through this journey, especially my coaches and teammates. I’m looking forward to representing both Mitchell and USD in the coming years!

In club swimming, Smith competes for the Sioux Falls Swim Team. Last winter, she qualified for the USA Swimming Junior Futures.
