Indie musician Mitski has announced she will not embark on a traditional tour to promote her latest album, Nothing’s About to Happen to Me, opting instead for a series of residencies in select cities. In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter), the singer-songwriter explained her decision, citing a “stronger pull towards writing” as the primary reason for scaling back her performing schedule.
The album, released on February 27, 2026, under the Dead Oceans label, has been described as a narrative-driven work centered on a reclusive woman navigating personal freedom and societal expectations. Mitski, who wrote all the songs and collaborated with producer Patrick Hyland, has previously toured extensively for her earlier releases, including The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We (2023), which debuted at No. 12 on the Billboard 200.
Residencies Over Traditional Touring
Rather than a conventional tour with nightly stops in different cities, Mitski’s 2026 schedule includes multi-day residencies in 14 locations, including New York, Los Angeles, Sydney, and Singapore. The tour began in March with six performances at The Shed in New York’s Hudson Yards and will conclude on July 21 in Singapore. Supporting acts for various dates include Sex Week, Gustaf, La Zorra Zapata, Haley Heynderickx, Maria Somerville, Tarta Relena, and Gwenifer Raymond.
In her video statement, Mitski acknowledged that the residency format differs from her past touring approach but emphasized that it aligns with her current creative priorities. “I can’t do it at the same time,” she said, referring to balancing writing and performing. “Some artists maybe can. I’m not someone who can do it all.” She added that reducing her performance commitments does not rule out future traditional tours but reflects her current focus on writing.

“Right now I feel a stronger pull towards writing more, and in order to do that, I have to cut back on performing.”

Mitski expressed enthusiasm about the creative potential of this writing period, though she stopped short of promising specific outcomes. “I feel really, really excited about potentially getting to show you what comes of this writing period,” she said. “I can’t assure you of anything. But I feel excited about what comes of this. And I hope you are too.”
Not an Uncommon Choice
Mitski is not the only artist to favor residencies over traditional touring. Pop star Harry Styles adopted a similar approach for his 2025 “Together, Together” tour, performing 60 shows across seven cities. Styles described the residency format as beneficial to the quality of the performances, noting that it allowed for a more immersive and evolving show without the constraints of nightly travel.
The decision to prioritize writing over touring comes amid broader industry discussions about the financial and personal toll of extensive touring schedules. While some artists have canceled shows due to economic challenges, Mitski’s choice appears driven by creative rather than logistical factors. Her residencies, which include extended runs in major cultural hubs, offer fans an opportunity to experience her work in a more concentrated setting.
