Mitsubishi Motors has confirmed that its new flagship large SUV, expected to carry the revived Pajero nameplate, will arrive in Australian showrooms by the end of 2026. The announcement, made by Bruce Hampel, General Manager of Product Strategy and Product Public Relations at Mitsubishi Australia, locks in the local launch timing for what the company describes as its most important global product. The vehicle is currently undergoing validation testing across Australia, underscoring the market’s strategic significance to Mitsubishi Motor Corporation.

Hampel stated that Mitsubishi Australia will be able to share more details about the vehicle around the middle to third quarter of 2026, which aligns with the anticipated timing of its global reveal. He noted that while an Australian launch event was previously considered, the global unveiling will take place in Japan, reflecting the model’s importance to the domestic market. “We have vehicles in Australia at the moment,” Hampel said, confirming that camouflaged prototypes were spotted on public roads late last year by outlets including CarsGuide.

The upcoming SUV is positioned as a direct competitor to established off-road leaders such as the Toyota LandCruiser and Nissan Patrol, with Mitsubishi emphasizing its “fully fledged off-road capability.” Reports indicate the vehicle may feature a body-on-frame chassis and terrain-focused engineering, continuing the Pajero’s legacy of durability and go-anywhere performance. The nameplate retains strong recognition among enthusiasts, particularly for its historical strength in rugged conditions, and the new model is expected to leverage this heritage while integrating modern design and technology.

Mitsubishi’s return to the Australian SUV market comes after a prolonged absence from the passenger vehicle segment in India, where stricter BS6 emission norms led to the discontinuation of models like the Pajero Sport around 2020. However, the brand has maintained a presence through pre-owned demand and recent strategic moves, including a 2024 joint venture between TVS Mobility and Mitsubishi Corporation to develop a mobility ecosystem in India focused on vehicle sales, after-sales services, and Vehicle-as-a-Service solutions. This partnership, backed by an initial investment of Rs 300 crore, signals Mitsubishi’s broader intent to strengthen its footprint in evolving mobility markets.

The reintroduction of the Pajero nameplate represents a significant business decision for Mitsubishi Motors, marking the revival of one of its most iconic models after years of dormancy. With global production and testing underway, the vehicle’s Australian launch by end-2026 will serve as a key milestone in the company’s efforts to reestablish itself in competitive off-road segments. Further details on specifications, pricing, and trim levels are expected to be disclosed closer to the global reveal in mid-to-late 2026.
