Para Table Tennis: A day ⁤of Historic Firsts

One year ago today, Para table‍ tennis celebrated two landmark⁤ moments showcasing its heritage and future. Slovakia’s Jan Riapos, a legend in the Club 8 category competing in his eighth Paralympic Games, won his fifth ‍Paralympic gold medal. Simultaneously, China’s Zhao Shuai and Mao Jingdian ⁤made history by winning⁣ the inaugural Paralympic Para‍ table tennis mixed doubles title.

Riapos & Lovas Claim Class 4⁤ Men’s Doubles Gold

At 56, Jan⁣ Riapos teamed up with Paralympic debutant Peter Lovas to defeat Korea Republic’s Hang Yeongjin and park Sung Joo 3-1 (12-10, 7-11, 11-7, 11-8) in the Class 4 Men’s Doubles final. Riapos noted the⁤ difference between doubles and singles play, calling it a “great achievement.”

For Peter Lovas,the victory was particularly special: “I feel incredible,I can’t describe how I feel. This⁣ is my first Paralympic Games and we won the gold medal,so it is indeed ⁢absolutely amazing.”

Riapos emphasized the importance of experience and mentorship,⁣ stating, “I tried to ⁣hand over ⁢to Peter everything I know. My experience was invaluable, especially in thes heavy and long matches.”

Zhao & Mao ⁢Win Inaugural⁢ Mixed Doubles Title

China’s zhao Shuai and Mao Jingdian secured the ⁣first-ever Paralympic mixed doubles title with a 3-0 ‍victory over fellow Chinese pair Peng Weinan and Xiong Guiyan in the Class ‍17 final. This win marked the beginning of a new chapter in Paralympic table tennis.

The champions expressed their joy, stating, “We are very⁣ happy to win the gold medal… Mixed doubles is also a new event in this⁢ Olympics. We support each other in this Olympics, especially emotionally. This gold medal also proves that our efforts are not in vain.”
