COLUMBIA, Mo. – No. 8 Tennessee defeated Mizzou softball 3-1 on Thursday, April 30, at Mizzou Softball Stadium, dropping the Tigers to an even .500 record for the season. The loss brings Missouri’s overall record to 27-27 and their Southeastern Conference record to 8-14.
Tennessee (41-8, 15-7 SEC) broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning with a two-run single, and extended their lead to 3-0 in the sixth on a solo home run. Missouri managed to score their lone run in the bottom of the sixth when junior Stefania Abruscato hit her ninth home run of the season to right-center field.
Missouri starting pitcher Cierra Harrison took the loss, allowing two earned runs over five innings while striking out four batters. Tennessee’s Karlyn Pickens earned the win, pitching 6.1 innings and allowing one run on four hits with nine strikeouts. Sage Mardjetko started in the circle for Tennessee but was replaced by Pickens after recording two outs in the first inning.
The Tigers had opportunities early in the game, forcing a pitching change for Tennessee with three walks, but were unable to capitalize. A double play and a groundout ended the inning without any runs scored.
A rain delay occurred early in the first inning. Following the delay, Abruscato threw out an advancing Tennessee runner attempting to extend a one-out single, preventing further damage.
Missouri needs to win two of their next four games to remain above .500 and secure a spot in the first round of the SEC Tournament. The Tigers are currently ranked 41st in the NCAA RPI rankings.
Tennessee leads the all-time series against Missouri 15-8, and holds a 6-3 record in Columbia, Missouri. The Tigers were previously swept by the Lady Vols in Knoxville in 2024. Head coach Larissa Anderson has a 4-8 record against Tennessee.
