TAMPA, Fla. – Paul Skenes pitched seven scoreless innings, striking out six, as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-2 at George Steinbrenner Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The outing marked the first win of the year for the Pirates’ highly touted pitching prospect in his second start. Skenes was a National League Rookie of the Year candidate in 2024.
Oneil Cruz contributed to the Pirates’ offense with his second home run of the spring. He also added an RBI via a sacrifice fly.
The 22-year-old right-hander did not issue any walks. The Rays’ only run while Skenes was on the mound was unearned, resulting from a defensive error by Isaiah Kiner-Falefa on a ground ball hit by John Deluca in the sixth inning.
Skenes induced 13 swings and misses from Tampa Bay hitters but did not record a strikeout until the third inning – a first in his young professional career.
Ryan Pepiot started for Tampa Bay, pitching five innings and allowing two runs on five hits with three walks.
Pittsburgh (2-5) snapped a four-game losing streak with the win. The team is scheduled to begin its home schedule at PNC Park in the coming days.
The Pirates will host the New York Yankees in their home opener on friday.
