MMRV Vaccine Safety in Children Receiving Methotrexate or Dupilumab: A Retrospective Analysis
Could Common Medications be Safe with Live Vaccines for Kids? New study Suggests It’s Possible
St. Louis, MO – A new study challenges current recommendations regarding live vaccines for children taking certain medications. Researchers at Saint Louis University School of Medicine found no adverse events in children who received the measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (MMRV) vaccine while on dupilumab or methotrexate.
The study, published in Pediatric Dermatology, retrospectively analyzed electronic medical records of pediatric patients at a tertiary care center between 2017 and 2023.Researchers focused on children treated with dupilumab or methotrexate for allergic or dermatologic conditions who also received the MMRV vaccine.
“We identified 313 pediatric patients treated with dupilumab or methotrexate during the study period,” explained lead author Julia R.Hughes. “Of those, nine received the MMRV vaccine – five while on dupilumab and four while on methotrexate.”
Remarkably, no adverse events were observed in any of the nine vaccinated children for up to six months following immunization.
A Call for Further Research
While these findings are encouraging, the authors emphasize the need for larger, prospective studies to confirm these results and establish clear guidelines.
“Larger studies are needed to establish evidence-based recommendations for the safe and effective use of live virus vaccines in children treated with methotrexate, dupilumab, and other medications that impact immune function,” the authors wrote.
The study acknowledges limitations, including the small sample size and the retrospective nature of the analysis.
This research opens the door for further investigation into the safety of live vaccines for children on these common medications, possibly expanding vaccination options and improving public health.
