Mobile devices and Birth, Death Notification Systems Examined
Updated August 2, 2019
A recent Cochrane Review investigated the use of mobile devices in birth and death notification systems. The review aimed too evaluate the effectiveness of these mobile solutions and understand the factors influencing their practical application. Researchers analyzed available studies to determine the impact of mobile devices on birth notification and death notification processes.
The analysis included 21 studies, primarily from low- and middle-income countries, focusing on rural, remote, or marginalized populations. These populations are often underrepresented in official registration or have limited access to health services. The review sought to determine if mobile devices improved the number and timeliness of registered births and deaths, and whether this led to increased use of health services like immunization.
One study assessed the effect of using mobile devices for birth notification. No studies examined their effect on death notification. The review found vrey low certainty evidence regarding the impact of mobile devices on the number of properly notified births and deaths.
other studies provided insights into how mobile device-based systems are used. Several factors were identified as possibly influencing the implementation of birth and death notification via mobile devices. These factors relate to the health system, the notification system, the notifier, the community, and the families involved.
“We no very little about the effects of using mobile devices to notify births and deaths,” the review stated.
Identified factors include geographic barriers, access to trained health workers, monitoring systems, legal frameworks, community awareness, socio-cultural norms, government commitment, costs, access to electricity and network connectivity, and data confidentiality.
The researchers expressed low to moderate confidence in these findings, citing study designs and limited data as primary reasons.
What’s next
Further research is needed to fully understand the impact of mobile device-based notification systems on birth and death registration, especially in diverse settings and with robust study designs.
