MONROVIA, Liberia – A ‍mobile medical unit is providing urgently needed care to residents of West Point, one of the‍ oldest and⁤ most impoverished communities in Liberia’s capital. Samaritan’s Purse is operating the clinic.

Dorithy, a grandmother seeking medical‍ attention for her one-year-old⁤ grandson Charles,‍ said the child has experienced eating difficulties and various health issues as⁢ birth. She also lost her home two weeks prior to⁣ a fire caused by an electrical ⁣failure.

Before visiting the⁣ clinic, Dorithy did not ‌know where ‌to turn.

Laughter and relief at the Dispensary table, where a ‍pharmacist provides medicines as well as kindness to patients in West Point.

“Even in the public hospital, when you ⁢go, they say it‌ is ⁣free, but⁢ you pay, and pay, and pay before they ⁣give you a treatment,” Dorithy said.

Deepali Savyasachi,⁣ advancement officer of Samaritan’s ‍Purse in Liberia, said the ⁣people of West Point face significant ⁤challenges related to⁣ housing, medical care, nutrition, sanitation, education, and the protection of vulnerable women and children. Families gather early to wait for thier medical consultations. ⁣For many in‍ West Point, this mobile clinic is the only possibility ‍to see a⁢ health professional.

“This is a densely‍ populated place. Health facilities are a major problem,” Savyasachi said.”We see many sick, malnourished children,⁣ and we know that this⁤ clinic can reach⁣ them. Teenage pregnancies are very high⁤ here. The schools are scarce. There are⁢ many ⁢street children.”

A nurse controls a patient’s‌ blood pressure. Many⁣ inhabitants do not have any access to regular ⁢medical care and depend on ⁤the community‌ scope ‌to be treated.

“We move from one ‌area to another along West Point,” Savyasachi explained. “We wanted ‌to see how we can use the‍ resources we have to maximize the impact of the‍ kingdom.”

Ministry⁢ Beyond Medicine

Before the medical ‌team released Charles and his grandmother,Edith Perry,a ⁤nurse, asked if ‌she‍ could pray with them.

“Lord, we need Dorithy and charles ‌to know that‌ they are⁤ not alone,” Perry prayed. ‌She added, “we serve patients, but we also listen. Sometimes people just need them to listen‌ to them, ‍know that someone is interested in them. It’s not just about medicine. It is dignity. It is a way of saying: ‘God sees them.'”
