Mochizuki Stages Stunning Comeback to Take the Lead in Thrilling Tennis Showdown
Shintaro Mochizuki Advances to Qualifying Finals in Chengdu Open
Shintaro Mochizuki, the second seed in the men’s singles qualifying round of the Chengdu Open (China/Chengdu, hard, ATP250), came from behind to defeat Charles Chen (China), ranked 1,305th in the world and a wildcard, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. This win puts Mochizuki in a strong position to qualify for the main tournament.
Mochizuki, 21 years old and ranked 147th in the world, recently participated as a representative of Japan in the Davis Cup World Group 1 match “Japan vs. Colombia” (Japan/Tokyo, Ariake Coliseum, Hard), where Japan won on the 14th and 15th. After that, he moved to China to take part in this tournament.
In the first set of the first qualifying round against 16-year-old Chen, Mochizuki was held on break point in the second game and committed a double fault, allowing Chen to be broken. However, Mochizuki recovered in the second set, winning five games in a row from the fifth game onwards to tie the score at one set.
In the final set, Mochizuki won points on his first serve with a 91 percent success rate, did not give his opponent a single break point, and broke twice in the return game to win the match in one hour and 45 minutes.
Mochizuki will face eighth seed L. Tu (Australia) in the qualifying finals to advance to the main tournament. Tu defeated world No. 269 E. Gerasimov in the first qualifying round.
