A Hungarian designer has proposed a modern reimagining of the Škoda Rapid, presenting the vehicle as a coupé. This conceptual design explores the intersection of retro inspiration and contemporary automotive aesthetics, aligning with a broader trend of reviving classic silhouettes for the modern era.

The proposal arrives during a period of significant design evolution for Škoda. The company has recently introduced its Modern Solid design language, which emphasizes robustness, authenticity, and a forward-looking approach. This new philosophy is rooted in sustainability and user-centric innovation, utilizing minimalist forms and bold surfaces to redefine the brand’s aesthetic.

The Evolution of Škoda’s Design Language

The transition toward the Modern Solid language is most evident in Škoda’s latest electric concepts and production goals. A key element of this new direction is the Tech-Deck Face, a glossy black component that replaces the traditional grille. This element serves a dual purpose by concealing essential sensors while providing a clean, high-tech appearance.

The Evolution of Škoda's Design Language

Complementing the Tech-Deck Face is a sharp LED Light Band featuring vertical eyelashes positioned above the unit. This design links the Matrix beam headlights, creating a confident visual identity that blends functional lighting with emotional appeal.

This shift toward minimalist and bold forms is also visible in Škoda’s current electric concept portfolio, which includes:

  • The Škoda Epiq, an all-electric city SUV crossover combining smart functionality with bold design.
  • The Škoda Vision, a sleek electric estate concept focused on sustainability and everyday practicality.
  • The Škoda Vision 7S, a robust electric seven-seater designed for maximum comfort and space.

Contextualizing the Rapid and Crystalline Design

The Rapid model has historically represented a balance of functionality and emotional design. Previous iterations of the Rapid were noted for harmonious proportions, sharp lines, and clearly formed surfaces, which established the vehicle’s confidence within the compact limousine segment.

More recent versions, such as the Škoda Rapid Onyx, have utilized crystalline design. This approach incorporates world-class features including quartz-cut projector headlights and chrome grilles to evoke an aura of luxury.

Retro-Innovation and Electric Concepts

The Hungarian designer’s focus on a modern Rapid coupé mirrors Škoda’s own experimentation with its heritage. The company recently unveiled an electric concept based on the classic Favorit hatchback, a model first introduced in 1987. This project demonstrates how timeless designs can evolve to meet contemporary environmental standards and the requirements of eMobility.

The push toward electric mobility is central to the brand’s future. The current design strategy is specifically tailored for the age of eMobility, ensuring that future electric models maintain the brand’s commitment to clean design and responsible mobility.

By blending historical references—such as the silhouette of the Rapid or the Favorit—with the Modern Solid language, the brand and independent designers are exploring how to maintain brand identity while transitioning to a fully electric fleet.
