Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigns as Vice President Citing Health Reasons
New Delhi: Jagdeep Dhankhar, the current Vice President of India, has submitted his resignation from the post, citing health reasons. The resignation was accepted by President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday, marking a important progress just as the Monsoon Session of Parliament commenced.
Dhankhar’s Resignation Letter and Reasons
in his letter to President Murmu,Dhankhar stated,”To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice,I hereby resign as the Vice President of India,effective instantly,in accordance with Article 67(a) of the constitution.” He expressed his deepest gratitude to the President for her unwavering support and the positive working relationship they shared during his tenure.
dhankhar also extended his profound appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Council of Ministers, acknowledging the invaluable cooperation and support he received. “Prime Minister’s cooperation and support have been invaluable, and I have learned much during my time in office,” he remarked.
A Swift Departure from a High Office
Jagdeep Dhankhar, who assumed the role of Vice President in august 2022, was expected to hold the position until 2027.His resignation, submitted on the first day of the Monsoon Session, has led to considerable speculation regarding the underlying reasons, with some political observers noting a perceived shift in the relationship between the Vice President and the central government.
Prior to his vice-presidency, Dhankhar served as the Governor of West Bengal, a tenure characterized by notable disagreements with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. As Vice President, he also held the crucial position of Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.Prime Minister narendra Modi took to X, formerly Twitter, to acknowledge Dhankhar’s service. ”I am grateful for his contributions as Vice President. His insights and dedication have been invaluable. I wish him the very best for his future endeavours,” the Prime Minister posted.
