India’s First Rapid Rail and Meerut Metro Inaugurated, Boosting Connectivity in Uttar Pradesh
Meerut, Uttar Pradesh – Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), known as NaMo Bharat, and the Meerut Metro on Sunday, marking a significant expansion of rapid transit infrastructure in western Uttar Pradesh. The launch includes the dedication of the entire 82-km Delhi-Meerut NaMo Bharat corridor and the unveiling of development projects totaling approximately ₹12,930 crore.
The Prime Minister arrived at Hindon Airport in Ghaziabad at approximately 11:00 AM, before traveling to Meerut for the day’s events. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath received him at the Mohkampur helipad near Shatabdi Nagar station at 11:30 AM, according to the district administration.
At 12:30 PM, Prime Minister Modi flagged off the NaMo Bharat train and the Meerut Metro from Shatabdi Nagar NaMo Bharat Station. He then traveled with Chief Minister Adityanath by metro to Meerut South station. From there, the Prime Minister proceeded by road to Mohiuddinpur, where he addressed a public meeting around 1:00 PM.
The NaMo Bharat service, part of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor, is designed to provide high-speed, high-frequency connectivity between Delhi and Meerut. The Meerut Metro, operating on the same infrastructure, boasts a top operational speed of around 120 kmph, promising a commute across the city in approximately 30 minutes.
The inauguration of the 82-km Delhi-Meerut corridor includes newly completed sections between Sarai Kale Khan and New Ashok Nagar in Delhi, and Meerut South and Modipuram in Uttar Pradesh. The NaMo Bharat train has a design speed of 180 kmph.
Chief Minister Adityanath had earlier reviewed security and logistical preparations in Meerut, inspecting arrangements at Shatabdi Nagar station and the public meeting venue. Authorities implemented a multi-layered security system and intensified traffic diversions in anticipation of the Prime Minister’s visit.
The project is part of the Centre’s broader push to expand rapid rail connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and promote sustainable urban mobility. The inauguration of these projects is expected to significantly improve transportation and commute options for frequent travelers in the region.
