A Session Marked by Disruption and Division
The 2025 Monsoon session of Parliament concluded on August 21st with a palpable sense of discord, characterized by frequent disruptions and a stark divide between the ruling coalition and the opposition. The Lok Sabha was adjourned indefinitely, signaling a breakdown in consensus and a failure to fully utilize valuable parliamentary time. Despite the challenges, Prime minister Narendra Modi deemed the session “good,” highlighting the passage of several key bills.
Prime Minister’s Outreach and Opposition Boycott
Following the adjournment, Prime Minister Modi hosted a tea meeting for members of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA). This gesture, however, was met with a coordinated boycott from opposition parties, underscoring the deep-seated tensions that permeated the session. The Prime Minister reportedly used the meeting to praise the NDA’s legislative achievements, specifically citing the potential impact of the online Gaming bill on the public. He also expressed regret that the opposition did not engage more constructively in debates on meaningful legislation, attributing their behavior to disruptive tactics.
Legislative Output Amidst the Chaos
Despite the limited time for debate – a mere 37 hours out of a scheduled 120 in the Lok Sabha – a total of 14 bills were introduced, and 12 were passed. The Lok Sabha sent the Public Confidence Bill to a select Committee and the PM-CM Removal bill to a Joint Parliamentary Committee for further review. Though, the majority of bills were passed without thorough discussion, raising concerns about the quality of legislative scrutiny.

Internal Party Dynamics and Accusations
Prime minister Modi also touched upon internal dynamics within the opposition, specifically referencing the Congress party. He suggested that talented young leaders within the opposition were being stifled by what he characterized as “insecurity of the family” – a pointed reference to the Gandhi family. He posited that Rahul Gandhi may be contributing to this perceived insecurity and nervousness among younger colleagues. A recent heated exchange between Amit Shah and KC Venugopal in the Lok Sabha, where accusations of moralizing were exchanged, further illustrates the charged atmosphere within Parliament, as reported on August 20th.
