Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared plans to transform India into a developed nation by 2047, stressing the importance of public trust in the government. He highlighted how the ordinary citizen plays a vital role in this change.
During his speech at the 22nd Hindustan Times Leadership Summit, Modi celebrated the centenary of the Hindustan Times, which Mahatma Gandhi inaugurated in 1924. He marked this milestone with the release of a commemorative postage stamp.
Modi praised his government’s achievements in providing public goods and welfare, prioritizing development over political gains. He emphasized that the goal is to achieve developed country status by August 15, 2047, the centenary of India’s independence.
He urged citizens to change their mindset and aim for global standards. Modi stated, “This is a remarkable journey” since the freedom struggle, where the people’s aspirations now drive India forward.
Modi addressed the challenges of the past, where poor governance eroded public trust. He noted that his government has worked to restore this faith through a focus on the needs of the people. “The progress of the people, by the people, and for the people” guides his administration’s approach.
He highlighted the importance of a risk-taking culture, recalling India’s historical significance in global trade. Modi asserted that boosting this culture is essential for progress.
To exemplify his administration’s initiatives, Modi pointed to several successful programs. He discussed the construction of toilets to enhance safety and dignity, which also stimulated local economies. Additionally, he noted the increase in LPG cylinder distribution and the rise in cashless transactions facilitated by UPI.
Modi emphasized substantial government spending towards development, which has expanded the Union budget dramatically since 2014. He explained how initiatives like direct benefit transfers and health schemes have saved citizens significant amounts of money.
He acknowledged that achieving the goal of an Indian century requires ongoing efforts from both the government and citizens. Modi concluded by calling for excellence in every sector. He stressed that continuous improvement is necessary for India to reach its full potential, and that media outlets like Hindustan Times have a crucial role in this journey.
