At least 110 people have died in central Nigeria after torrential rains triggered severe flooding, according to officials. The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (Nsema) reported that the intense rainfall, lasting several hours, caused widespread devastation in the region.
Abullahi Baba-Arah, head of Nsema, said that floodwaters surged through the Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa districts of Mokwa, washing away more than 50 homes. The Nigeria flooding marks a tragic start to the rainy season.
Muhammad Shaba Aliyu, the District Head of Mokwa, described the disaster as unprecedented. He said the community hasn’t experienced flooding of this magnitude in six decades. He appealed to the government for assistance in the wake of the Nigeria flooding.
“Surging flood water submerged and washed away over 50 residential houses with their occupants,” Baba-Arah said.
“I beg the government to support us,” Aliyu said.
Northern Nigeria experienced notable rainfall and flooding in 2024, resulting in deaths, displacement, and infrastructure damage. In 2022, severe flooding across the country displaced approximately 1.3 million people and caused over 600 fatalities.
