Byrd recalls feeling scared throughout her pregnancy, anxious about how life would change after decades without children. She grappled with guilt, reminding herself how long she had waited for this moment. Ultimately, she embraced the idea that her child would simply be an extension of herself.
Her son, Crue, was born in november 2024. Despite years of listening to friends with children, the early days of motherhood were overwhelming.Byrd faced a barrage of advice about what she should and shouldn’t do with her baby.
The benefits of late-in-life motherhood
Byrd joined online and in-person mother and baby groups, finding a supportive community of “older” mothers.
She says she feels a sense of calm that helps her care for Crue. Years of research and observation have given her confidence, even when things don’t go as planned with breastfeeding or sleep. She knows that she and her baby will be OK.
having achieved financial security, Byrd didn’t have to worry about providing for her baby. With an established career, she coudl plan for all baby-related expenses, including IVF.
After years of corporate work, parties, and fine dining, Byrd felt content settling in at home with her baby and husband. She never feels like she’s missing out.
The only concern she has encountered is about her health. Byrd acknowledges that as she gets older, health issues may arise that younger mothers might not face. This has motivated her to take better care of her body so she can fully enjoy her time with Crue as he grows up.
Becoming a mother had always been Byrd’s dream. She maintained hope throughout the IVF process, and although delayed, her dream finally came true.
