Monkeypox Mayhem: Australia Sees Alarming Surge with 179 New Cases in August – Is the World on the Brink of Another Epidemic
Monkeypox Resurgence in Australia: A Growing Concern
The recent resurgence of monkeypox in Australia has raised concerns about the potential for a more serious global epidemic. After nearly eliminating the virus within six months of the outbreak in 2022, the country has seen a sudden and dramatic increase in cases, with 179 reported in August alone, surpassing the combined total of the previous two years.
According to the latest data, more than 550 cases have been reported in Australia, with the majority being men who have sex with men. This has led health experts to emphasize the importance of vaccination in preventing the spread of the virus.
The Importance of Vaccination
Andrew Grulich, head of HIV epidemiology and prevention at the Kirby Institute at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, stressed the need for gay and bisexual men to get vaccinated. “We need to let gay men know that monkeypox is back and is here to stay, so the way forward is vaccination,” he said.
Community surveys in New South Wales and Victoria, Australia’s two most populous states, have shown that only half of gay and bisexual men have been vaccinated, leaving a significant number of people vulnerable to infection. In the current outbreak in Victoria, most cases have occurred in people who have not been vaccinated or have only received one dose of vaccine.
Optimal Protection with Two Doses
Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Clare Looker emphasized that two doses of the vaccine are needed for optimal protection against monkeypox. With the rapid rollout of vaccines, along with rapid case detection and isolation, health authorities are working to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread of the virus.
The recent increase in cases highlights the need for continued vigilance and awareness about the risks of monkeypox. As the situation continues to evolve, health experts will be closely monitoring the situation and providing updates on the best ways to prevent the spread of the virus.
