Monster Hunter has long been a series that captivates gamers with its thrilling gameplay and immersive world. However, for some enthusiasts like Dwayne, the story has never been the main draw. Since “Monster Hunter: World” seven years ago, the series has continued to evolve, but the narrative has remained a secondary concern. This has made the journey to High Rank in “Monster Hunter Wilds” a bit more challenging for Dwayne, who has always been more interested in the gameplay than the story.

Monster Hunter fans typically don’t demand much from Capcom. As long as there are fresh new monsters and an in-depth high rank, they are satisfied. However, with “Monster Hunter Wilds,” Capcom has made some significant changes, especially in the narrative area. After about forty hours of gameplay, Dwayne concludes that these changes are not always for the better.

“We Monster Hunters usually do not demand much from Capcom. If they ensure fresh new monsters (and a few old acquaintances) and an in-depth high rank, then we wag on it like a bunch of horny dogs.”

Monster Hunter is a series that offers a no-chill gameplay experience. In recent days, the neighbors have undoubtedly wanted to call home safely for me, because my screams made me think that I was setting up my girlfriend. However, they are the shocking armpits, caused by the rude tempered samples that explain the excitement. The animals that Capcom puts opposite me (read: gorillas, dinosaurs, dragons and everything in between) put the fire on me a lot while I am monitoring their fragile body parts. “I have to get that facing tail this time!” I think constantly.

Skipping

While all of that races through my head, I also correctly try to throw out the musical attacks of my loyal hunting Horn – I have played nothing else since World -. If I have played a few, then I can blow a song with a crazy buff. So while those animals try to slap my head off, I hand out deadly symphonys until they are struggling at my feet. And did I blow even harder, understood?!

Monster Hunter Wilds

No worries: with regard to the above scene, acquaintances of the series will fully enjoy themselves in Monster Hunter Wilds. The beloved gameplay run of research, preparation and finally the hunt remains intact. But: compared to the more recent predecessors, the newest descendant seems to choose essential points for the new player. And then the enthusiast of yesteryear might be a bit destitute.

By the way, I am by no means a fan of the first hour, but even for me, Wild’s feels much more to which is more to which and sometimes downright easier than World. Both in terms of story and gameplay, it is noticeable that Capcom wants to get more players from the Hunter’s Guild.

I spent the start of my playthrough on listening to dialogues of NPC X, answering questions and walking around on my mount while other NPCs talk. And occasionally clap a monster. Because Capcom places the disposable stories (read: the apologies to make me stamped dragons) that have been inventing in the foreground for years for the series. In the spotlight. In Japanese it can be sustained for a long time, but after hearing a few hours I am sitting on the skip button with my claws. Lore-Purists will pulverize me, but cry me a river: I am here to hand out pets.

Gravel

Fortunately there is more than enough room for that when I have seen the credits. High Rank really feels like Monster Hunter: there are countless sidquests to do and increasingly stronger variants of the existing samples present themselves while my Hunter Rank continues. Depending on the endgame progresses, the gravel shifts from stronger gear to literally dissecting your targets. If I look for crafting material for that one specific belt or glove, then I have to fix the horns of that specific sample. An omnipril feeling, but it never gets old.

The most eye-catching new function in the Wilds combat helps somewhat in the fixing of various parts of samples. They develop wounds as you exhaust them, and you can break those wounds. You do that through special focus attacks, which you activate by literally down the sights to aim with your weapon. Wounds light up and you touch them with a special attack, then you automatically get a free piece of material from the monster that you hunt. In addition, there will also be a special attack (in the case of the Hunting Horn a chance to play several musical notes in one go) and a guaranteed stagger.

That makes the gravel more than friendly, not to say trivial for the real veterans of the series. I personally think it is a nice addition, because the fatigue in previous parts mainly struck when I had to grind the same monster ten thousand times for one piece of Armor. Even more nicer is that Capcom lets you choose at the Focus mechanism: you can go for the special attack with intern, or you simply determine where the wound is and stays on that point for a while. That such a thing is not forced is very pleasant.

In High Rank it also immediately becomes clear: Monster Hunter Wilds does not offer a large, central hub world where you will find everything. The different worlds of Wilds are freely exploring. If you want you can change the world without loading screens, which I think could never have been in Monster Hunter before. In practice, however, you are always on fast traveling from place to place to hunt the local monsters, to do quests on your own, with (very competent) computer-controlled enemies or with real people.

Playing online works just a little smoother because of the new link parties, but Capcom makes things unfortunately still unnecessarily complicated by the many ways to play together. The goal is simple: connect players. Then why, Capcom, can I meet other people by going with them in guilds, getting into their lobby, making link parties, sending and sending the left, or just inviting them for a quest? We just want to play together easily. Come up with something universal, or something.

Anyway, there is no central hub. Each world has its own hub where the fixed things such as the Quest Board, the blacksmith, shopkeepers, etc. come back, but there are also certain places where you are exclusive late game items can get. So you always have to travel there. Capcom still offers an NPC that sells all the items from the different merchants, but for some important items I always have to travel fast. Annoying, because I actually just want everything in one hub.

Monster Hunter Wilds

So there they are. My shiny shiny Artian Dragon-Hoorn (four hundred Dragon damage, more than nine hundred raw damage, twenty percent affinity, at least thirty levels five skills and countless buff-decorations) and my full upgrade, five-part armor of an endgame beast that I am not allowed by name to call. It is somewhat a shame that I am standing here, because my friends still have to start playing.

On the other hand: the road here was considerably more tiring than I am used to, so I have to enjoy it. One thing is certain: this Dikke Gear will come in handy later, because I will definitely stay around in Wilds for the many title updates and the thick fat DLC that we know will come.

Monster Hunter Wilds is set to release on February 28 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.

With Monster Hunter Wilds, Capcom seems to be a bit in the obsession to bind new players to him, but happily recovers in High Rank to stay behind with a positive feeling. The story is the biggest blemish on a further freely trusted experience – although it is a lot less hardcore than before.

Q: What is “Monster Hunter Wilds” and what makes it stand out from previous titles?
