Montana & Wyoming Weather: Clouds & Quiet Sunday, Active Weather Ahead
Cool, Quiet Sunday Before Wetter Week Arrives in Montana
Billings and surrounding areas can expect a cool and dry Sunday, a brief respite before a shift in the weather pattern brings increased wind, and chances for both rain and snow next week, according to the Q2 News weather team.
After a period of clearing skies Saturday, another wave of clouds will move over Montana and Wyoming late tonight and early Sunday. However, unlike previous systems, this one isn’t expected to bring additional snowfall.
“We won’t get additional snow, though,” Q2 Meteorologist Jason Stiff reported. “Sunday will be quiet, but active weather is coming.”
Sunday’s high temperatures will be slightly below average, but a significant warming trend is on the horizon. Monday will see a dramatic increase in temperatures, climbing 15 to 20 degrees warmer than Sunday’s forecast.
The change in weather will bring more than just warmer temperatures. A disturbance moving overhead Tuesday and Wednesday will bring stronger winds and increased chances of precipitation. Valley locations could see rain, while the mountains are likely to receive snow. Lower elevation snow is possible, but not highly probable.
The unsettled weather pattern is expected to continue through Saturday, with lingering wind and further opportunities for both rain and snow.
Further west, in West Yellowstone, Montana, conditions are similar, with a mix of sun and clouds expected in the coming days. However, the broader forecast indicates a more active pattern developing across the region.
Quiet conditions are expected to continue through Sunday across western Montana, according to NBC Montana, before a moist Pacific system arrives Monday. This system is predicted to bring snow to mountain passes, including Lookout, Lolo, Marias, and Lost Trail, potentially making travel difficult. Valley locations may experience slick roads during the morning commute as snow gives way to rain or a rain-snow mix by afternoon.
A cold front is anticipated to move through late Tuesday into Wednesday, bringing cooler air, gusty winds, and more organized showers. Snow levels will drop back to valley floors, with the possibility of brief, heavier bursts of snow reducing visibility.
