Montenegro Reels After Deadly Bar Shooting, Gun control Measures Under Review

PODGORICA, Montenegro – A wave of grief has swept over Montenegro following a horrific shooting that left 12 peopel dead and four injured in a Podgorica bar. The gunman, who authorities say had been drinking heavily throughout the day, took his own life after the rampage.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the small Balkan nation, prompting calls for stricter gun control measures. Prime Minister Dritan abazović visited the injured in the hospital Thursday afternoon, vowing swift action.

“We will consider all options, including a complete ban on firearm ownership, which cannot be ruled out,” Abazović told reporters. “What happened is a huge tragedy, and we must ask ourselves who in Montenegro should be allowed to own firearms, both for sport and hunting. The criteria must be strengthened to the maximum. Stricter penalties must be imposed on those who illegally possess or carry firearms.”

The Prime Minister announced that the National Security Council will convene Friday to discuss stricter gun control measures in response to the tragedy.

The shooting, which occurred after an altercation in the bar, has left the nation grappling with questions about gun violence and its prevention. Police have ruled out the possibility of organized crime involvement, stating that the shooter had been consuming alcohol throughout the day leading up to the incident. Three of the injured remain in critical condition.

A Nation in Mourning

The shooting has sparked a national conversation about gun control in Montenegro.

“its devastating,” said Lena, a Podgorica resident. “Twelve lives lost… it’s heartbreaking. What’s the reaction been like in Montenegro?”

“The whole nation is in mourning,” she added. “The Prime Minister visited the injured and promised swift action. He said they’re considering all options, including a complete ban on firearm ownership.”

David, another resident, expressed his concern. “It sounds like they’re taking this very seriously. Do you think stricter gun control will actually make a difference?”

Lena responded, “It’s a complex issue, but it seems like a necessary step. The Prime Minister also announced that the National Security Council will convene to discuss these measures in detail.”

The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence, not only in the United States but globally. As Montenegro mourns its victims, the nation grapples with the urgent need to find solutions to prevent such tragedies from happening again.
