Montgomery County Board Meeting: School Budget, Subdivision Vote & Referendum Prep

Christiansburg, VA – The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors is set to address a busy agenda Monday evening, including a presentation on the upcoming school budget, a vote on a significant housing development, and preparations for a statewide referendum on redistricting.

The board will convene at 7:15 p.m. In the second-floor board chambers of the county government center, located at 755 Roanoke St. In Christiansburg.

Third Phase of Walnut Creek Subdivision Up for Vote

Supervisors will consider approving the plat for the third section of the third phase of the Walnut Creek subdivision, located off Houchins Road near Christiansburg. The project previously received approval from the county Planning Commission earlier this month. The development builds upon the reclassification of over 100 acres for housing in 2005.

The current proposal outlines the construction of 30 single-family attached (townhouse) residential lots, accompanied by nearly a half-acre of dedicated open space. Water services will be provided by the town of Christiansburg, while sewer services will be managed by the county Public Service Authority.

School Budget Presentation Scheduled

County school system officials will present their budget plans for the upcoming fiscal year 2026-27. However, the agenda packet did not include a link to the full budget proposal.

Preparing for State Referendum and Other Appropriations

The board will also vote on several appropriations, including:

• $80,000 to the elections office to support an April state referendum concerning the redrawing of congressional districts ahead of the November election. It’s important to note that a Tazewell County circuit court judge has temporarily blocked the referendum, citing flaws in the legislation. The case, along with a previous related decision, has been appealed to the state Supreme Court.
• Nearly $65,800 to the city of Radford as part of a revenue-sharing agreement, stemming from increased collections of transient occupancy, sales, and meals taxes.
• Nearly $33,800 to the county Public Service Authority for fire hydrant maintenance.
• More than $5,700 seized during county sheriff’s office drug task force investigations. Over $4,300 of this will go to the sheriff’s office, with the remainder allocated to the commonwealth’s attorney’s office.
• $6,500 – a required rebate to the federal government due to unspent bond proceeds generating more interest than the amount paid on the bonds.
