Montreal Invests $23.2 Million too Combat homelessness, Calls for Provincial Action

City Funding and a Plea to Quebec
Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante announced a significant investment of $22.5 million on Tuesday to support community organizations working to address homelessness within the city. This funding, allocated over three years, will empower 39 organizations to implement 42 crucial projects. The funds originate from the city’s resources dedicated to urban roaming and improving the living surroundings.
Though,Mayor Plante didn’t stop at municipal action. She concurrently issued a strong call to the Quebec provincial government, urging them to appoint a dedicated minister specifically responsible for tackling the growing crisis of homelessness across the province. She described the need for a “top Gun” minister, signaling the urgency and scale of the problem.
Supporting Vulnerable Populations with Targeted Programs
Beyond the core funding for community organizations, the City of Montreal’s executive committee is scheduled to review a proposal on Wednesday to allocate an additional $700,000 towards a transportation initiative for vulnerable individuals. This program, slated to launch in 2026, aims to improve access to essential services by providing shuttle transportation.
the shuttle service will be a collaborative effort, involving Aboriginal projects in Quebec, Mission Old Brewery, and Love in Action, ensuring culturally sensitive and effective support for those who need it most.
