Montreal, Quebec – Beach volleyball fans in Montreal will have to wait and see if the city will host a stop on the prestigious Beach Pro Tour in 2025. despite a accomplished event in 2023, the 2024 edition was canceled due to a lack of funding, leaving the future of the tournament in limbo.
Joseph Limare, the promoter behind the event and director general of the Grand Prix Cyclistes de Québec et de Montréal, is working tirelessly to bring the Beach Pro Tour back to Montreal. However, he remains cautiously optimistic about the prospects for 2025.
“We have interest. Will the event return in 2025? There’s still some work to be done,” Limare said, estimating the chances at “50-50.”
He emphasized the collaborative effort underway, stating, “This is a project we’ve been working on for a few months with, of course, the City of Montreal and, especially, Tourisme Montréal, which is putting a lot of energy into keeping this event.”
While public partners, including the city and provincial government, have shown commitment, securing federal funding through Volleyball Canada remains a key hurdle.
“As this summer, with the work we’ve done and the budget we’ve prepared, the hand of public partners is raised, the commitment is there, particularly at the city and provincial levels. There are still steps being taken with Volleyball Canada for the federal aspect. We hope for answers, or other answers than the first ones we received regarding federal funding, so we can move to the next stage, which is to legalize the budget and perhaps concretize discussions with private partners who are also paying attention at the moment,” Limare explained.
Securing the remaining funds, estimated at around half a million dollars, will require a combination of public and private investment.
“It’s a financial path that remains to be taken. It’s roughly half a million dollars that we still need to find, public or private, but it will take a bit of both, I guarantee you, for the circle to be complete,” Limare concluded.
