More Funds for Comites in Italy’s 2025 Budget
Italian Expats Win Funding Boost for Overseas Committees
Rome, Italy – A sigh of relief swept through Italian communities abroad as a crucial amendment secured additional funding for the Comites, vital support networks for Italians living overseas.
Senator Andrea Crisanti, a member of the Democratic Party representing Italians in Europe, lauded the amendment, which allocates an extra €600,000 to the Comites. This comes after months of advocacy by Crisanti and fellow Italian lawmakers representing overseas constituencies.
“I am very pleased that the request I personally made to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has been partially met,” Crisanti saeid in a statement. He had previously expressed concern over the drastic reduction in Comites funding in the 2022 budget, which crippled their operations.
“These funds are essential not only for the activity but for the very existence of the Comites,” Crisanti emphasized. “They play a valuable and irreplaceable role in supporting our fellow citizens abroad, particularly the most vulnerable: young people seeking work, students, and the elderly.”
Crisanti highlighted the crucial role Comites play in assisting Italians abroad, often working alongside consular services. He thanked his colleagues in the Chamber of Deputies elected from overseas constituencies for championing the amendment.
The additional funding, while a welcome relief, falls short of the full restoration Crisanti had initially sought. He remains committed to advocating for further support for the Comites, ensuring they can continue to effectively serve the needs of the Italian diaspora.
