Morehead State to ⁤Honor Phil Simms with Stadium Renaming

Morehead State ​university will rename its football stadium in honor of alumnus Phil Simms,⁤ the former New York Giants quarterback and ​super Bowl XXI MVP. The Phil Simms dedication ceremony is scheduled for Oct. 18, during homecoming weekend in Morehead, Ky.

Simms,⁤ a Kentucky native, played for Morehead ​State from 1974 to 1978. During‌ his college ​career, he ​threw for 5,545 yards and 32 touchdowns. In 1977, he was⁣ named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year. His success at Morehead⁢ State paved the way‍ for⁣ a stellar NFL​ career.

Athletic⁣ director Kelly Wells ‍emphasized‌ Simms’ long-standing commitment to the university. “Phil simms has remained loyal⁣ to MSU throughout the years,” Wells said. “He has given MSU his time,⁤ talent, ‌and treasure to MSU as his days as a college athlete…‌ This recognition is most deserving and long overdue.”

Simms was the seventh‍ overall pick by the Giants in​ the‍ 1979 NFL draft. ⁢He played with the team until 1993. A two-time Pro Bowl selection, Simms ranks ​second in Giants history with⁢ 33,462 ⁤passing yards and 199 touchdown passes. His super Bowl ⁢MVP performance saw him‍ complete 22 of 25 passes ⁤for 268 yards and three ⁤touchdowns in a 39-20 victory over the Denver Broncos.

He‍ earned a second‌ Super⁤ Bowl ring in Super ‌Bowl XXV, even though he was injured and replaced ⁢by Jeff Hostetler. The Giants defeated the Buffalo Bills 20-19.

Simms, who ‍will turn ⁣70 ‍in November, received his bachelor’s degree ‌from⁤ Morehead State in 2015. The university also awarded him an honorary doctorate. After retiring from football,​ Simms spent three decades as a broadcaster.
