Senator Demands Protection After Heated Exchange in Mexico’s Senate
Mexico City, Mexico – A tense confrontation erupted on the floor of Mexico’s Senate, leaving one senator demanding protection and threatening legal action. Senator Lilly Téllez, a member of the opposition National Action Party (PAN), accused Senator Ricardo Monreal of Morena, the ruling party, and Senate Majority Leader Adán Augusto López of physically and verbally assaulting her during a heated debate.
Téllez, visibly shaken, addressed Senate President Alejandro Armenta, stating, “I have the support of my parliamentary group, who witnessed the physical and verbal aggression I just suffered from Senator Yunes and Coordinator Adán Augusto López, along with the threats. There are recordings of this, as well as the threats and insults they directed at me for stating a phrase during the debate, of course, in the heat of the moment.”
She emphasized that her intention as a public servant was never to harm anyone, but rather to engage in discourse about ideas and conduct when they are questionable. Téllez directly held Monreal and López responsible for her safety and the safety of her family, stating,”I want to hold you,Mr. President, responsible for my safety and the safety of my family because you were a witness to the aggression perpetrated by the morena senators against myself and Senator Vargas, the vice-coordinator of our group.”
Téllez announced her intention to file a formal complaint, stating, “This is inconceivable for a respectable Senate, for an institution of this level. It is inconceivable what you are doing. You are attacking me for an expression made during the debate.”
The incident highlights the growing tensions within Mexico’s political landscape, with opposition parties increasingly vocal in their criticism of the ruling Morena party.
