Morocco-UK Underwater Power Cable Project
UK Eyes Massive Underwater Power Cable to Morocco for Renewable Energy Boost
Could a 4,000-kilometer underwater cable linking Morocco and the UK revolutionize BritainS energy future?
That’s the vision of Sir Dave Lewis, former Tesco chairman, who is spearheading the enterprising project with Xlinks. The plan involves laying two massive underwater cables, stretching 4,000 kilometers across the Atlantic Ocean, to transport clean energy from Morocco’s sun-drenched Sahara Desert to British homes.
Xlinks has already secured authorization from National Grid, the UK’s electricity system operator, to connect two 1.8 GW capacity cables to the Devon coastline. This ambitious project could potentially supply up to 8% of Britain’s electricity needs, according to Xlinks.
“this project could provide a reliable source of renewable energy for the UK,available for around 19 hours a day throughout the year,” the company states.
To ensure consistent power delivery, the moroccan end of the project will feature vast battery storage facilities with a capacity of 5 GW/22.5 GWh,capable of storing excess solar and wind energy generated during peak production times.
A key Step Towards a Greener Future
Xlinks aims to begin construction on the project by the end of the decade, contributing to the UK’s goal of achieving a “clean” electricity system by 2030. This target aims for at least 95% of the UK’s electricity to come from low-carbon sources.
In 2023, the UK imported 33.2 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity and exported 9.4 TWh, according to the International Energy Agency. While the UK produced 324 TWh domestically, this pales in comparison to European powerhouses like France, which generated approximately 475 TWh.The Xlinks project represents a bold step towards diversifying the UK’s energy mix and reducing its reliance on fossil fuels. by tapping into Morocco’s abundant renewable resources, the UK could substantially advance its transition to a cleaner, more enduring energy future.
