Moscow Targeted by Massive Drone Attack as 620 Drones Aim at Russian Capital

At least 620 drones targeted the Moscow region in a massive nighttime aerial assault between August 17 and August 18, according to an announcement by Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin. The scale of the attack triggered short disruptions to regional flight operations and caused structural damage, including a hit on a logistics hub operated by e-commerce giant Wildberries.

Scale of the Moscow Drone Attack and Air Defense Response

Russian air defenses destroyed 180 of the incoming unmanned aerial vehicles between Monday evening, August 17, and 5:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday, August 18, as reported by Mayor Sergey Sobyanin on Telegram. The aerial barrage prompted authorities to briefly suspend air traffic around the Russian capital.

Regional Governor Andrey Vorobyov stated that three people sustained injuries during the overnight strikes, including a 10-year-old child. The press service for e-commerce firm Wildberries confirmed that one of its logistics complexes sustained minor damage after being struck by a drone.

Simultaneous Strikes and Casualties in Ukraine’s Kharkiv Region

While the Russian capital faced the drone onslaught, conditions in northeastern Ukraine proved significantly more lethal. A Russian rocket strike killed at least 10 people and injured eight others in Pechenihy, a locality situated approximately 60 kilometers from Kharkiv.

Oleg Synegoubov, the head of the Kharkiv regional military administration, reported via Telegram that emergency rescue crews remained active at the impact sites. The strike damaged residential homes, vehicles, a local post office, and a shop.

Broader Aerial Campaign and Conflict Escalation

The Ukrainian air force stated that Russia launched 147 drones during the same night, with Ukrainian forces intercepting or shooting down 111 of them. This follows a broader military escalation over recent weeks that has severely impacted civilian infrastructure and safety across both nations.

According to a United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine report, the preceding month marked the deadliest period for Ukrainian civilians since May 2022, recording 437 deaths and 2,610 injuries. The ongoing cross-border strikes highlight an intensification of aerial warfare tactics by both sides.
