The path to the vacant title required complex negotiations involving top contenders. Itauma had initially been ordered to negotiate a fight with Cuban contender Frank Sanchez by 29 July, according to BBC Sport. However, Sanchez agreed to step aside on specific terms.

We paid [Sanchez] some money. We said whoever wins the fight, you’re not losing out, and you’ll get the opportunity to fight for the title against the winner, Warren explained to The Independent, confirming that Sanchez secured an immediate mandatory position against the victor of the Itauma-Hrgovic clash.

Britain’s Itauma enters the ring with an unblemished professional record of 14 wins and no losses, featuring 12 knockouts, as detailed by The Independent. His recent resume includes a fifth-round stoppage of American Jermaine Franklin in Manchester in March, alongside a swift one-round knockout victory over Dillian Whyte in August 2025.

Across the ring, Croatia’s Hrgovic brings a record of 20 wins and one loss, with 15 coming by way of knockout, according to independent records. The 34-year-old, a 2016 Olympic bronze medallist cited by BBC Sport, is currently riding a three-fight win streak following his sole career defeat against Daniel Dubois in 2024. Hrgovic’s recent campaign includes consecutive victories over British opponents, culminating in a third-round stoppage of Dave Allen in May 2026.
