Copenhagen Named World’s Most Liveable City in 2025 Index
Copenhagen, Denmark, has been named the world’s most liveable city, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2025 Global Livability Index. The Danish capital edged out Vienna, which had held the top position since 2021, and Zurich in the annual rankings.
The index evaluates 173 cities based on factors such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, stability, culture, and surroundings. Each city receives a score out of 100, determining its place on the list. Affordability was not a factor in this year’s assessment.
Australian cities continue to play a prominent role in the rankings. Melbourne secured fourth place for the second consecutive year, boasting perfect scores in healthcare and education. Sydney climbed to sixth place, while Adelaide entered the top 10 at ninth. Like Melbourne,Sydney and Adelaide earned perfect scores for healthcare and education,but scored lower in culture and environment.
The average liveability score across all cities surveyed was 76.1 out of 100. While stability scores saw a slight decrease, improvements were noted in education, healthcare, and infrastructure.

Al Khobar,Saudi Arabia,showed the most significant betterment,rising to 135th place due to increased scores in healthcare and education. Conversely, Calgary, Canada, experienced the steepest decline, falling from fifth to 18th place.Vancouver is now the only Canadian city in the top 10.
Several U.K. cities, including Manchester, london, and Edinburgh, also saw notable declines due to lower stability ratings.
Damascus, Syria, remains at the bottom of the list as the least liveable city, followed by Tripoli, libya. Despite leadership changes, Damascus continues to suffer from the effects of ongoing civil conflict, showing no improvement in its liveability score.
