A mother and her two daughters were killed early Sunday in a fiery highway crash in Texas after attending a concert, according to local authorities and family statements reported by CBS News Texas. The deadly collision occurred on a bridge along U.S. 80 near Windmill Farms Boulevard in Kaufman County, when an 18-wheeler slammed into the family’s vehicle.
Family members identified the victims as 38-year-old Va’Necia Williams and her daughters, 14-year-old Sa’Niah Davis and 9-year-old A’veonia Davis, according to CBS News Texas. The family had recently moved to Forney a few months prior, and relatives noted the mother and daughters had attended a concert before heading out for late-night food.
Crash Details and Investigation
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the family’s 2013 Hyundai was disabled and had stopped in the right lane of the bridge when the semi-truck rear-ended them. The impact forced the family’s car over the concrete railing of the bridge, resulting in the fatal fire, CBS News Texas reported.
The 18-wheeler involved in the crash appeared to be operated by Truckline Solutions, an Illinois-based company, based on information displayed on the vehicle, according to CBS News Texas. Representatives from CBS News Texas reached out to the company for comment, but received no response. Texas DPS public information officer Juan Gutierrez stated that investigators are examining whether speed, alcohol, or a medical emergency contributed to the crash.
Commercial Vehicle Inspections
Because a commercial vehicle was involved in the collision, commercial vehicle enforcement troopers deployed to conduct a full inspection of the semi-truck, according to Texas DPS.
What that entails is looking at the tires, brakes, logbooks to see if they’re within their driving hours and all that comes along with commercial vehicles,
Juan Gutierrez said, as reported by CBS News Texas.
Texas DPS confirmed that the investigation into the crash remains ongoing. Meanwhile, the grieving family has established a GoFundMe account to assist with funeral expenses, according to CBS News Texas.
