Motorcycle Crashes Claim Lives Across Multiple States

A series of motorcycle crashes over the weekend resulted in fatalities in Florida, Polk County, and Tybee Island, Georgia, according to reports from multiple sources.

In Jacksonville, Florida, a 36-year-old Staten Island man was killed Tuesday night when his motorcycle was struck from behind by a sedan on State Road 9B at Interstate 95, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The 18-year-old driver of the sedan was also traveling southbound.

Further south, on Tybee Island, an off-duty Tybee Island police officer, identified as Tron Lewis, 32, died Saturday morning in a motorcycle accident on Ogeechee Road in Savannah. Lewis collided with an SUV, and the driver of the SUV was hospitalized but not seriously injured. Tybee Island Mayor Jason Buelterman described Lewis as an “excellent officer” who “served our citizens and visitors very effectively.” Flags on the island are flying at half-staff in his memory.

In Polk County, Florida, 41-year-old Reinaldo Lopez, Jr., of Poinciana, died Saturday night after a collision between his 2005 Suzuki motorcycle and a 2015 Mercedes-Benz sedan on Ronald Reagan Parkway near Loughman. According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the driver of the Mercedes was attempting a U-turn and moved into the path of Lopez’s motorcycle. Lopez was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The driver of the Mercedes, 30-year-old Melissa Soberanis of Davenport, and her passenger, 25-year-old Sihomaris Seise of Winter Garden, were unharmed. The roadway was closed for approximately three hours while investigators worked the scene.

Also on Saturday, a motorcycle crash outside Tybee Island resulted in one death and six injuries. Details surrounding this incident are limited.

Authorities have completed investigations into the Polk County and Tybee Island crashes. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office stated that speed did not appear to be a factor in Lopez’s death and that criminal charges are not expected at this time. The Tybee Island Police Department has not released further details regarding the crash involving Officer Lewis.
