Mount Dukono Erupts: Ash Spews 1,200 Meters High – Alert for Residents
Mount Dukono in North Halmahera Regency, North Maluku, erupted on December 1, 2024, at 08:27 Eastern Indonesian Time. The eruption sent ash up to 1,200 meters above the volcano’s peak. Bambang Sugiono, an observer from the Mount Dukono Volcanic Observation, reported that the ash column appeared white to gray, moving northwest.
The eruption registered on the seismogram with an amplitude of 20 mm and lasted for 276.93 seconds, recorded by the PGA Dukono post in Mamuya Village. Mount Dukono is currently at Level II alert status, which indicates an alert condition. Residents and visitors are advised to avoid activities within a three-kilometer radius of the volcano crater.
Bambang warned against approaching or entering the Malupang Warirang Crater within the restricted area. The volcano has shown periodic ash eruptions, with ash dispersion influenced by wind direction and speed. Residents living nearby are encouraged to wear masks and goggles during outdoor activities for protection against volcanic ash.
