‘Succession’ Writer Jesse Armstrong Focuses on Toxic Tech Billionaires
Updated June 01,2025
Jesse armstrong, known for the hit series “Succession,” is turning his attention to toxic tech billionaires with his new film,”Mountainhead.” The film, starring Steve Carell and Jason Schwartzman, follows a group of billionaire friends as they compare fortunes against a backdrop of international crises.
Armstrong said he hopes the film will resonate with those “feeling wonky about the world.” He channeled his own anxieties into the project, aiming to create a space for others to process theirs.

Armstrong, who garnered widespread acclaim for “Succession,” winning 19 Emmys and nine Golden Globes, is now one of the most sought-after writers. Before “Succession,” he was known for the comedy “Peep Show.”
“I love comedy,” Armstrong said. “The mixture that you get of tragedy and absurdity strikes me as a sort of a true portrayal of the world.”
Armstrong wrote, shot, and edited “Mountainhead” in under six months, tapping into the current unease surrounding big tech. He said the film’s theme “snuck up on me as an area of interest” after listening to tech podcasts and TED talks.

While Armstrong insists there are no direct parallels to real-life tech moguls, he joked about viewers playing a game of “where did I steal what from who?” He suggested viewers might see elements of Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Sam Altman in the film’s characters.
People who lack a certain degree of self-knowlege are good for comedy…and if there was more self-reflection and self-knowledge, there probably wouldn’t be such amenable targets for comedy and satire.
Armstrong’s ability to blend humor with dramatic storytelling is a key element of his success. He views his work as a way to portray the world as it often feels.
