The son of Prince Harry’s cousin, Harry mountbatten-Windsor, has officially been recognised by the aristocratic family following a change of name to Theodore Mountbatten. The move comes after initial resistance from the boy’s mother,Bella, who had previously been reluctant to bestow the prestigious surname upon her son.
A Change of Heart and a Dash to the Printers
Bella initially felt that Harry, 64, a successful businessman and the current Marquess of Milford Haven, didn’t have the right to dictate the name of her child. However, the Marquess’s persuasive nature, coupled wiht his demonstrable kindness and devotion to his grandson, Theo, ultimately swayed her.
“But the Marquess is a persuasive man and he is extremely kind and a doting grandfather to Theo,so eventually Bella relented for his sake,” a source revealed.
The change was formalised with an updated birth certificate issued in October, officially registering the boy as Theodore Mountbatten. This prompted a frantic effort to update the order of service for Theo’s christening, a “dash to the printers” as one insider described it.
The History of Mountbatten and Family Recognition
The adoption of the Mountbatten name itself is steeped in history. It was originally anglicised from Battenberg in 1917 during the First World War by Prince Louis of Battenberg, the current Marquess’s great-grandfather. This change was a direct response to anti-German sentiment prevalent in Britain at the time.

Despite the formal recognition, Theo has largely been kept out of the public eye. Sources say the Marquess, who made his fortune selling uSwitch for £210 million in 2006, is a frequent visitor and describes the boy as looking “every inch a Mountbatten,” inheriting the striking blue eyes and blond hair of his father and grandfather.
Society Pages Remain Silent
The story hasn’t been without its complexities. Despite the family’s acceptance, society bible Tatler notably omitted Theo from a recent article detailing the family’s grandchildren. Even the attendance of Prince Harry’s former girlfriend, Cressida Bonas, at Theodore’s christening went unmentioned in the magazine’s society pages.
“Theo has been recognised by the mountbatten family, though he has been kept out of the public eye,” a source explained. “Even when prince Harry’s former girlfriend, Cressida Bonas, attended theodore’s christening, Tatler’s society pages remained silent.”
Family Dynamics and Future Outlook
Harry and Bella live separately, with harry residing in a multi-million-pound Knightsbridge home and Bella and Theo living nearby in a rented property.
Bella, who works part-time with Four Mamas, a company supporting women through pregnancy and motherhood, declined to comment on the situation.
Though, Harry expressed his joy and optimism for the future, stating: “Like all of his cousins, he is surrounded by our warm family that love him more than anything. I can’t wait for all our adventures in the future.”
The Mountbatten family’s history of adapting to societal pressures, as demonstrated by the name change in 1917, suggests a willingness to evolve and embrace the future – a future that now officially includes young Theodore Mountbatten.
