Table of Contents
A new reboot of the “Mummy” franchise is facing significant challenges after test screenings revealed a largely negative response. The film has been respun to distance itself from the existing franchise, and is now known as “The Resurrection”. This is the latest attempt to restart the popular film series, particularly after the failed 2017 Tom Cruise film derailed initial studio plans.
Director Lee Cronin (“Evil Dead Rise”), who initially positioned the project as a wholly new beginning, is confronting the reality of the situation. Initial test screenings showed the result fell considerably short of expectations, with two-hour-long sessions provoking a sharply negative reaction from viewers.
Viewer Feedback and Rumors
According to data from Feature First, the feedback was “worse than anyone could have imagined.” Rumors circulated on social media that director james Wan (“Aquaman,” “Insidious”) was unable to sit through the entire film and left the test screening early. While this details hasn’t been officially confirmed,it’s been widely discussed.
Immediately following these events, the film received a new title, aiming to create distance from the existing “Mummy” franchise.
Excessive Violence and Plot divergences
Test screening viewers heavily criticized the excessive level of violence. Cronin, who received positive reviews for “Evil Dead Rise,” significantly raised the on-screen level of gore and brutality in this project. One scene, described by an attendee as “truly disturbing,” depicts a scorpion stinging a person’s mouth, damaging their vocal cords, requiring another person to physically press on their throat to allow them to speak.
According to feedback from test viewers, “The Resurrection” is very different from the classic “Mummy” film. This is likely the main reason “Worldwide” decided to abandon the existing brand and market the film as a standalone horror project with a new title.
New Plot and Upcoming Premiere
“The Resurrection” centers on a family drama. A journalist’s young daughter disappears in the desert. eight years later, she unexpectedly returns, but what should have been a joyful reunion quickly turns into a family-shattering nightmare.
As early as 2024, Cronin warned that this film wouldn’t be a typical installment in the series. “It won’t be like any ‘Mummy’ movie you’ve seen before. I dug deep beneath the ground to find something very old and very frightening,” he previously stated.
The film stars Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, May Calamawy, Natalie Grace, and Veronica Falcon. “The Resurrection” is scheduled for release on April 17, 2025.
