Colombian Fintech Eyes Peruvian Market
Movii,Colombia’s third-largest digital wallet with over 3.5 million users, has officially launched its services in Peru. The expansion, announced in November 2023, marks a significant step in the company’s regional growth strategy and introduces a new level of financial accessibility to the Peruvian population.
Movii differentiates itself by focusing on serving the unbanked and underbanked populations. In Colombia, it has built a strong network of over 20,000 active payment points, allowing users to deposit and withdraw cash easily - a crucial feature in countries where customary banking penetration is limited. This model is expected to be replicated in Peru.
Addressing Financial Inclusion in Peru
peru presents a compelling market for Movii due to its substantial unbanked population. Approximately 44% of Peruvian adults do not have access to traditional banking services, according to data from the World Bank.Movii aims to bridge this gap by offering a mobile-first financial solution that requires only a national ID and a smartphone to get started.
The digital wallet will allow Peruvians to make payments, receive remittances, pay utility bills, and access other financial services directly from their mobile devices. Movii’s strategy centers on providing a secure and convenient alternative to cash, reducing reliance on informal financial systems.
Strategic Goals and Projected Growth
Movii’s initial goal in Peru is to establish a robust network of payment points, mirroring its triumphant Colombian model. The company plans to partner with local businesses – including pharmacies, supermarkets, and retail stores – to create a widespread network for cash-in and cash-out transactions. They are initially targeting 5,000 points by the end of 2024.
Beyond payment services, Movii intends to introduce credit and savings products tailored to the needs of the Peruvian market. The company is actively seeking partnerships with local financial institutions to expand its service offerings and reach a wider audience. Movii anticipates reaching one million users in Peru within the first two years of operation.
Competition and Market Dynamics
Movii enters a Peruvian market already populated by several digital wallet providers, including Yape and Plin. However, Movii believes its focus on financial inclusion and its extensive payment point network will provide a competitive advantage. Yape, backed by Banco de Crédito del Perú,currently holds the largest market share in Peru, with over 10 million users as of November 2023. Plin, operated by Interbank, is another significant player.
The success of Movii in Peru will depend on its ability to navigate the regulatory landscape, build strong relationships with local partners, and effectively market its services to the target demographic. The company’s experience in Colombia positions it well to address the unique challenges and opportunities presented by the Peruvian market.
