Maputo, Mozambique – A daring prison break in Mozambique’s capital has deepened the nation’s crisis, adding another layer of chaos to an already volatile situation sparked by disputed election results. Over 1,500 inmates escaped from a Maputo prison on Wednesday, exploiting the widespread unrest that has gripped the country.

The breakout occurred amid clashes between prisoners and guards,leaving 33 people dead and 15 injured,according to police chief Bernardino Rafael. While authorities have as recaptured approximately 150 fugitives, the majority remain at large, raising serious concerns about public safety.

This dramatic event follows weeks of protests and violence across Mozambique. The unrest erupted after the country’s highest court upheld the victory of the ruling Frelimo party in October’s presidential election. Although the court revised the margin of victory downwards, opposition candidate Venâncio Mondlane, who fled the country, continues to allege the election was rigged.

Mondlane had urged his supporters to demonstrate against the results, leading to violent clashes with security forces and widespread looting and vandalism. Businesses have shuttered,and many residents are staying indoors,fearing for their safety.

“Maputo was like a ghost town on Christmas Eve,” a BBC reporter observed,highlighting the severity of the situation.

The violence has claimed at least 21 lives sence Monday, according to the interior minister, adding to the grim toll of over 150 deaths since the election disputes began three months ago.
