The Long-Held Story of Paul Fürst
For over a century, Paul Fürst, a confectioner in Salzburg, has been credited with creating the Original Salzburger Mozartkugeln in 1890.The Fürst confectionery maintains that it still produces the pralines by hand, using the original recipe according to their website.
Currently, only Fürst confectionery is permitted to use the name “Original Salzburger Mozartkugeln.”
A New Contender: R. Baumann
Historian Gerhard Ammerer, while researching for a book on pralines, has unearthed an advertisement from Die Presse newspaper dated february 3, 1881. This ad features confectioner R. Baumann, whose business was a precursor to the modern Holzermayr confectioneries. Ammerer suggests this discovery necessitates a reevaluation of the accepted history of the Mozartkugel’s invention.
The Holzermayr family is considering legal action and consulting with trademark experts in response to Ammerer’s findings, according to reports.
Previous Disputes and Trademark Protection
Disputes over the Mozartkugel are not new. In 2017,the Austrian Supreme Court ruled against another company for offering sweets in packaging too similar to that of Fürst confectionery as reported by Reuters.
This demonstrates the strong protection afforded to the Fürst brand and its association with the original Mozartkugeln.
